If you’ve been down a rabbit hole of Sarna lotion reviews trying to figure out which one is actually for you – same. Because on paper they all sound vaguely similar and the packaging isn’t exactly screaming “here’s exactly what makes us different, bestie.” You’ve got the Sensitive, the Calm + Cool, and the newer Eczema Relief, and unless you know what pramoxine is or why colloidal oatmeal matters, it’s genuinely hard to know which one to throw in your basket. Spoiler: they’re doing very different things. One is basically a fast-acting itch blocker for sensitive skin, and one is built for the long game, and one is best avoided at all costs. So here’s the breakdown.
Sarna Sensitive Anti-Itch Lotion ($10.39)
When your skin is itchy, reactive, and you don’t want to go anywhere near a steroid, this lotion is the kind of thing you keep on your nightstand. The star of the show is 1% pramoxine hydrochloride, a topical anaesthetic that works by temporarily numbing the itch receptors in the skin – and it works fast. Studies have shown pramoxine’s itch relief to be comparable to 1% topical hydrocortisone creams, which is a big deal for anyone trying to avoid steroids long-term.
The texture is lightweight and non-greasy, and the supporting cast does its job quietly: aloe soothes, plant-derived squalane replenishes the skin’s lipid layer without clogging pores, and jojoba oil (very similar to the skin’s own sebum) helps moisturise. Nothing in here is trying to be fancy; it’s just a well-put-together formula that gets on with the job. It’s also one of the cleaner options in the anti-itch space – no steroids, no fragrance, no parabens, no mineral oil, and no hydroquinones. The one caveat: the active ingredient pramoxine provides temporary relief, not a cure. If you’re dealing with a chronic condition, this helps manage flares rather than resolve the underlying issue. A
Key Ingredients: 1% Pramoxine Hydrochloride
Benefits: Fast-acting temporary itch relief comparable to 1% hydrocortisone; Steroid-free and safe for daily use; Lightweight, non-greasy formula that absorbs easily
Cons: Relief is temporary – not a treatment for underlying conditions
Skin Types: Sensitive, eczema prone, dry skin
Fragrance-Free: Yes
Sarna Calm + Cool Anti-Itch Lotion ($13.49)
This is the one you grab after a hike gone wrong – bug bites, sunburn, a run-in with poison ivy. Where the Sensitive formula is all about gentle care, Calm + Cool is about speed and sensation. You feel it working almost immediately. That’s down to 1% Pramoxine Hydrochloride again for blocking itch signals. Unfortunately, formula also contains menthol. It provides a cooling and refreshing sensation people love, but it’s also a common irritant. I’m surprised to see it here. It has NO place in a lotion, let alone one for sensitive skin conditions. So even if this is technically an effective anti-itch lotion, I can’t recommend it due to its high irritating potential (ironic, I know!).
Key Ingredients: 1% Pramoxine Hydrochloride and 0.5% Menthol (active)
Benefits: Immediate cooling sensation; Itch and pain relief; Lightweight, fast-absorbing, non-greasy; Good for insect bites, sunburn, minor cuts, and poison ivy reactions
Cons: Menthol can be irritating on very sensitive or reactive skin
Skin Types: Normal, oily, combination
Fragrance-Free: Technically yes, but menthol makes it smell ok (and possibly irritates skin)
Sarna Eczema Relief Lotion ($13.49)
This is the newest addition to the Sarna lineup and it’s a different beast from the other two. Where those are both pramoxine-based topical anaesthetics, this one takes the classic eczema-care approach: 2% colloidal oatmeal as the OTC active, backed by a genuinely thoughtful moisturising formula. Colloidal oatmeal works by forming a light barrier on the skin while delivering anti-inflammatory and anti-itch activity. It temporarily protects and helps relieve minor skin irritation and itching due to eczema and rashes, while shea butter, jojoba oil, and beta-glucan help soothe and hydrate. The texture is lightweight and non-greasy, absorbing easily. It’s genuinely more moisturising than either of the other two Sarna lotions – this is designed to be used regularly as part of an eczema management routine, not just as a spot treatment.
Key Ingredients: 2% Colloidal Oatmeal (active)
Benefits: Rich moisturising formula with barrier-supportive ingredients; Suitable for regular daily use
Cons: No immediate anaesthetic effect – works more gradually than pramoxine-based formulas
Skin Types: Dry, eczema-prone, sensitive; anyone with a compromised or easily irritated skin barrier
Fragrance-Free: Yes

The Bottom Line
Itchy skin is genuinely one of life’s most underrated annoyances. It’s not dramatic enough to cancel your plans but it’s absolutely enough to ruin your evening, your sleep, and your entire vibe. So yeah – do yourself a favour, figure out which one your skin actually needs, and just… stop suffering unnecessarily. The lotion exists. It’s like $13. You’ve got this.
