Forma vs Ultherapy: which one is better for skin tightening? Let’s be honest: skincare alone ain’t going to tighten skin. And going for a face lift feels… well, too risky. A non-invasive treatment feels like the best option to turn the clock back a few years, but which one is best? There is a lot of noise around non invasive skin tightening. Promises of tighter skin, radiant skin, a more youthful appearance, minimal downtime…. But what most people really want is just firmer skin that still looks like them. Noticeable results without invasive procedures. In this article, I’ll break down these two common treatments, including what results you can realistically expect, side effects, and more.
Forma VS Ultherapy: What Are They?
Forma skin tightening is a non invasive treatment that uses radiofrequency energy. More specifically, it uses (bipolar radiofrequency technology delivered through a hand held device that glides over the skin’s surface in a circular motion, to be specific). If you have ever heard people compare it to a hot-stone massage, that is not an accident. It feels warm and comfortable.
Ultherapy treatment, on the other hand, uses micro focused ultrasound. This is not the same as the ultrasound used in pregnancy scans. It’s targeted ultrasound energy delivered at specific depths into the deeper layers of the skin and underlying tissues. Ultherapy is designed to reach the same structural layer addressed in a surgical facelift, without actually cutting the skin. It is a non surgical skin tightening procedure, but it isn’t gentle in the same way radiofrequency treatments are.
How Do They Work?
Both are popular options in recent years for skin laxity. Both are marketed as non invasive skin rejuvenation. Both aim to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. But they rely on very different technologies.
FORMA
Forma works by delivering controlled RF energy into the dermis. The goal is to heat the skin tissue to optimal temperatures, usually around 40 to 43 degrees Celsius. That heat causes controlled thermal injury to collagen fibers. When collagen fibers are heated, they contract. Over time, the body responds by increasing the production of collagen and elastin production. That means new collagen, improved skin elasticity, and gradually firmer skin.
Radiofrequency energy does not rely on light or pigmentation, which makes it safe for many skin types. It can treat various areas of the face and even areas of the body. It tends to target the mid dermis rather than the very deep structural layers. There is evidence that non ablative radiofrequency treatments increase collagen types I and III and improve skin texture and skin tone.
Said that, note that most of the peer reviewed data is on radiofrequency technology in general, not specifically on forma skin tightening as a branded device. That does not mean it does not work. It means they haven’t tested this particular device yet. Forma typically requires multiple treatment sessions. Think weekly sessions over a month or more, followed by maintenance treatments for optimal results.
ULTHERAPY
Ultherapy uses ultrasound technology, specifically micro focused ultrasound with visualization. It delivers ultrasound waves at precise depths, including the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, often called the SMAS layer. This is deeper than most radiofrequency treatments reach. When ultrasound energy hits those deeper skin layers, it creates small thermal coagulation points. The surrounding tissue is left intact, but those focused points trigger collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin and underlying tissues.
Studies show that micro focused ultrasound and concluded that it is effective for improving skin laxity and is generally safe for most people. The main difference with Forma? Ultherapy is usually a single session, more intense treatment that works deeper. Forma is typically a series of gentler sessions that work more superficially.
What Does Each Non-Invasive Procedure Feel Like?
This might sound superficial, but it is not. Comfort often determines whether you finish your treatment plan.
Forma feels warm. Many people describe it as a hot stone massage. The hand held device moves in a circular motion across the treated area. There is no need for numbing cream in most cases. You can return to normal activities immediately. It is an excellent option if you have a busy schedule and want minimal downtime.
Ultherapy is different. Because it targets deeper skin layers, it can feel sharp or intense. Some patients describe it as brief zaps of heat or discomfort along the jawline or brow lift area. For this reason, a good practitioner will offer numbing medication or pain relief. Don’t feel ashamed to take it. Beauty shouldn’t hurt. The recovery time is still short compared to invasive procedures, but you might experience tenderness for a few days.
Forma VS Ultherapy: Side Effects And Recovery Period
No non invasive procedure is completely risk free. Because radiofrequency energy does not break the skin’s surface side effects with forma are minimal. Think mild redness and slight swelling in the treated area that usually resolve within hours. Most people go straight back to daily activities.
With ultherapy, side effects can include redness, swelling, bruising, and tenderness. In rare cases, people have reported temporary nerve irritation. Potential risks are still far lower than with invasive procedures, but it is honest to say that ultherapy is the more intense treatment.

Forma VS Ultherapy: Who Is A Good Candidate?
Forma may be a great option if:
- You have mild skin laxity
- You want gradual improvement in skin elasticity
- You prefer a comfortable, relaxing experience
- You are targeting smaller areas or want overall skin rejuvenation
- You are willing to commit to multiple sessions and maintenance treatments
- It can also be useful for improving skin texture, fine lines, and even mild acne scars or stretch marks on certain areas of the body.
Ultherapy may be better if:
- You have moderate loose skin along the jawline or neck
- You are looking for a noticeable lift, especially in the brow lift area
- You want a single session with longer lasting results
- You are comfortable with a more intense treatment
FYI, if you have significant sagging, neither will replace a surgical lift. Also, medical history matters. Certain implants or conditions may limit the use of radiofrequency treatments or ultrasound energy. A proper consultation is essential.
How Long Do Results Last?
Forma results are gradual. You may notice radiant skin and tighter skin after a few sessions, but the best results appear after completing the full treatment plan. Because collagen production is ongoing, results can last several months, but maintenance treatments are usually recommended.
Ultherapy tends to show noticeable results over two to three months as new collagen forms. Many patients see improvement for up to a year or more after a single session. How long results last depends on age, baseline skin laxity, and the body’s natural collagen production.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal best approach. There is only the best approach for your skin, your goals, your tolerance, and your schedule. If you want a gentle, non invasive way to improve skin’s appearance, boost collagen fibers, and maintain youthful looking skin over time, forma skin tightening is a great option. If you want deeper tightening, a natural lift along the jawline or brow, and you are willing to accept a more intense experience for potentially longer lasting results, ultherapy may be the right treatment. When in doubt, make sure you ask as many questions as possible during your consultation, so you can make an informed decision and do what’s best for you.
