Myth or truth: can a copper pillow prevent wrinkles? FYI, I’m not talking of a copper-coloured pillow (phew, I like my pink 😉 ). I’m talking about pillows made out of copper oxide fibers. Yes, that’s a thing. When I first heard it, I was like, “that must be so bloody fake! What the heck are they gonna come up with to fool us next?” Yeah, I’m sceptical like that. But when I started to dig deeper, I found out there’s some truth in it. Turns out, copper pillows aren’t a complete scam, after all.
What Are Copper Pillows?
The most famous is Illuminage Skin Rejuvenating Pillowcase with Copper Peptides ($60.00), so I’ll use it as an example, ok? It’s a pillowcase made with 100% Cupron Copper Oxide Polyester. (In case you’re wondering, Cupron is the company that developed and patented this copper technology). This copper pillowcase is said to do two things:
- Prevent fine lines and wrinkles
- Improve the overall appearance of skin
Something worth pointing out: copper pillowcases are usually marketed as “anti-aging,” but many brands also suggest they can help with overall skin quality, like keeping your complexion smoother and even-toned. The hook is that every night you sleep, you’re exposing your skin to trace amounts of copper – so you don’t need to add an extra step to your routine. It’s skincare built into your pillow.
The best part? You can put it in the washing machine (just don’t use fabric softener!).

How Do Copper Pillows Work?
The idea here is that, when you sleep, the copper ions migrate to your skin, where they boost collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm. We know that copper peptides do produce more collagen than vitamins A and C. Ok, the studies were done in vitro instead than on real skin, but at least we have some evidence this technology could work.
Interestingly, copper peptides only boost collagen, but don’t improve the texture of the skin, so don’t throw your vitamins A & C serums in the bin just yet. But, does copper work in pillowcases, too? This is where it gets tricky. I only found one study that claims this technology works. And guess who did it? Cupron! Surprise, surprise!
I have to give them credit, though. It’s a double blind, placebo controlled, parallel, randomized clinical study, so more reliable than your usual manufacturer’s study. I bet you know what they’ve found out, though.
*Drumroll*
“Sleeping on copper oxide-containing pillowcases,” the scientists discovered, “results in reduction of wrinkles depth and overall improvement of skin appearance.” BUT, only by a mere 9%! So, yeah, copper pillows work. But don’t expect to see a big difference any time soon.

Do Copper Pillows Help With Acne Too?
People always ask this one. Since copper kills bacteria, the idea is that if your pillow stays cleaner, your skin stays clearer. Sounds great, right? And yeah, if you’re a side sleeper who always wakes up with cheek breakouts, it might help a little. But let’s be real – acne isn’t just about bacteria. It’s hormones, oil, clogged pores, stress, the whole messy cocktail. So will a copper pillow magically clear your skin? Nah. At best, it’s like wiping the crumbs off the table before dinner. Helpful, but it’s not the main meal.
How Long Before You See Results?
The Cupron-backed study showed visible improvements after four weeks, but they were modest. Realistically, any collagen-related change in skin takes months, not weeks, to show. Dermatologists usually say 8-12 weeks is the minimum window for collagen stimulation to make a visible difference. So if you’re expecting overnight results, you’ll be disappointed. Copper pillows are the definition of a slow burn – more “tiny nudge” than “instant transformation.”
Are They Safe For Sensitive Skin?
Pretty much, yes. Copper’s not some harsh acid that’s gonna torch your face overnight. You’re getting trace amounts, way less than what’s in an actual serum. Most people sleep fine on them. That said, if your skin is the type to throw a tantrum over everything, keep an eye out. Rare, but possible. Honestly, if you can handle a new moisturizer without breaking out in hives, you’ll probably be fine.
Do Dermatologists Recommend Them?
Derms are… polite about it. They’ll usually say, “Sure, it won’t hurt you, but don’t throw out your sunscreen or retinol thinking this is a replacement.” Translation: copper pillows are cute extras, not holy grails. If you’re already doing the basics right, fine – splurge. If not? Fix your routine before you start shopping for a magic pillowcase.
The Bottom Line
If money isn’t a concern for you and you want to tackle wrinkles on ALL fronts, the Illuminage Copper Pillow may be a good investment for you. If not, don’t worry about it. Forget the pillow and invest in sunscreen. That can prevent up to 80% of premature aging. Now, that’s what I call making a difference!
